Description

The Vego Grand Lean-To Greenhouse is the lean-to with room to stay a while. It’s built against the wall of your house, garage, or shed, so it’s steps from the kitchen, and at 100 sq ft there’s space for a bench of seedlings down each side and a chair in the center for a cold, sunny afternoon.

The growing side is the same as the smaller Lean-Tos, with more air: two roof vents and two side windows let heat out, the wall behind you blocks wind and gives back the day’s warmth at night, and the insulated polycarbonate holds steadier temperatures. If you want a greenhouse you’ll grow in and sit in, and you don’t want it at the far end of the yard, this is the one to look at.

Room To Grow, Room To Sit

The Grand Lean-To runs 12′6″ along the wall and comes 8′6″ out from it: the long wall of a garage, or the back of the house. Inside, that’s a bench down each side with a walkway between, and still a corner for a chair where the afternoon sun lands.

The roof rises to 9′2″ at the wall, so hanging baskets and tall tomatoes have headroom, and because it’s right off the back door, you’ll be in it on a January afternoon when a greenhouse at the end of the yard would sit empty.

Warmer Nights, Thanks To Your Wall

This is where a lean-to beats a freestanding greenhouse of the same size. A masonry wall in afternoon sun soaks up heat all day and radiates it back into the greenhouse at night, taking the edge off the coldest hours and the shoulder seasons. And with the house on one side, there’s one less wall losing heat to the wind.

A wood-framed or vinyl-sided wall still blocks the wind but stores less heat. If that’s your wall, plan on a small heater for hard freezes.

Insulated Panels That Hold Steadier Temps

The roof is 8mm triple-wall polycarbonate and the walls are 8mm twin-wall, with a 99% UV-resistant outer layer to keep them clear. The extra layer is on the roof because that’s where most heat leaves.

Vego’s general figure for 8mm polycarbonate is about 5–10°F warmer inside than out with no heater. With a warm wall behind you, the Grand Lean-To is set up for the better end of that range.

Fast Venting When You Need It

A greenhouse on a sunny wall warms up fast, and the Grand Lean-To is built to let that heat go. Two roof vents release the hottest air at the top, while two side windows in the end walls and the open top of the Dutch door bring cooler air in to replace it. Every opener works with one hand, and on a warm afternoon that’s a steady draft through the whole greenhouse, not just a crack of air by the door.

If you’d rather not think about it, you can upgrade to auto openers. They open on their own when a certain temperature is reached, no power needed.

Easy To Live With

The wide Dutch-style double door gives you an opening that takes a wheelbarrow, and the low threshold means nothing to lift it over. Open the top halves on a mild day and you get air without letting the dog and the rabbits in; the key lock is on the right-hand door.

Rain off the roof runs into flip-top gutters with downspouts. Closed, they collect water for the garden; flipped open in dry months, they stay clear of leaves.

Built To Stay Outside

The frame is powder-coated, rust-proof aluminum with stainless steel hardware, rated for 62 mph wind and an 18 psf snow load, with a 15-year frame warranty behind it.

18 psf is a moderate rating, so in snow country brush the roof after a big storm and keep the interior warm so snow can melt off. Also, watch for snow sliding off the house roof above it.

If You Need Smaller

If the Grand Lean-To is more than you need, the Lean-To family has two smaller sizes:

Vego Lean-To S Greenhouse installed along a house wall with the patio in the background

Lean-To S: just like this one but slimmer, for a walkway or a narrow side yard

Vego Lean-To Greenhouse along a house wall with doors open

Lean-To: the same build at half the floor (51 sq ft) for a patio edge or side yard

Q&As

What foundation do I need?

Your foundation needs to be level, square, and well-draining—that matters more than the material. A treated wood beam base (anchored) works well for many installs. For maximum stability, go with concrete blocks/pavers or a poured concrete perimeter/slab.

Helpful guides:

Can I attach it to any wall?

It needs a structurally sound wall: concrete, brick, masonry, or a wood-framed wall fastened into the studs. Anchors for both are in the box. Siding, stone veneer, fences, and trellises can’t carry the weight and wind load on their own, so on a sided house it’s anchored through the finish into the framing behind it.

Does the wall material matter?

Yes. Brick, stone, and concrete store the day’s heat and release it overnight, which is where the lean-to’s warmth advantage comes from. Wood or vinyl walls block the wind but store less heat, so plan on a heater for hard freezes.

How much wall do I need?

About 12½ ft of straight wall with 8½ ft of clear ground in front of it. Anything on that stretch of wall, like a window or a hose bib, ends up inside the greenhouse, so check it before you pick the spot.

Will it fit under my eaves?

The Grand stands 9′2″ where it meets the wall, so measure from the ground to the underside of your eaves or gutter before you order. On a single-story house that’s often close.

Is this a heavy-snow greenhouse?

No. It’s rated for 18 psf, which handles ordinary snowfall but not deep, wet accumulation. The Grand’s roof is the biggest of the three, so brush it after big storms, keep the interior warm so snow can melt off, and keep an eye on snow sliding off the house roof above it.

How do the vent openers work?

The manual openers can be fixed at the angle of your liking, which holds the vent open. The optional auto openers for the roof vents work with wax cylinders, which expand and contract with temperature to open/close the vent—so there’s no wiring and no power required.

Are There any accessories I should add?

We always recommend adding an exhaust fan because greenhouses can heat up very quickly in direct sunlight—even on mild days. If you plan to use the greenhouse in winter, you may need a heater as well.

Where does this ship from?

Houston, Texas

How Does Curbside Delivery Work?

Freight delivery drops your crate at the curb/end of driveway. Typically, you’ll unload the contents with the driver and the crate remains on the truck. If you have a forklift or tractor with long forks, you may be able to lower the whole crate using the liftgate. Plan for 2–3 people to help.

Tip: Make sure the truck can access your driveway and you have a clear staging area ready.
