Description

The Vego Lean-To Greenhouse is a real greenhouse for a yard that doesn’t have room for one. It’s built against the wall of your house, garage, or shed, so it’s a few steps from the kitchen: basil for tonight’s pasta, a tray of seedlings in March, and a warm corner to potter in on a cold afternoon.

Behind the convenience, the practical side holds up: insulated polycarbonate glazing, a wall that blocks the wind and gives back the day’s warmth at night, a wide Dutch-style double door, and vents you open with one hand. If you want to grow in a small space and have the greenhouse feel like part of the house, this is the one to look at.

Growing Right By The Kitchen

A lean-to needs one solid wall and the strip in front of it: the end of a patio, a side yard, or the blank wall by the back door. What you give up is the fourth wall; what you gain is a greenhouse you walk through on the way to dinner.

That matters more than it sounds. A greenhouse you see from the kitchen window gets watered, vented, and harvested. One at the far end of the yard gets visited on weekends. And if your only solid wall is the garage, you still get 51 sq ft of growing space in a spot a freestanding greenhouse wouldn’t fit.

Warmer Nights, Thanks To Your Wall

This is where a lean-to beats a freestanding greenhouse of the same size. A masonry wall in afternoon sun soaks up heat all day and radiates it back into the greenhouse at night, taking the edge off the coldest hours and the shoulder seasons. And with the house on one side, there’s one less wall losing heat to the wind.

A wood-framed or vinyl-sided wall still blocks the wind but stores less heat. If that’s your wall, plan on a small heater for hard freezes.

Insulated Panels That Hold Steadier Temps

The roof is 8mm triple-wall polycarbonate and the walls are 8mm twin-wall, with a 99% UV-resistant outer layer to keep them clear. The extra layer is on the roof because that’s where most heat leaves.

Vego’s general figure for 8mm polycarbonate is about 5–10°F warmer inside than out with no heater. With a warm wall behind you, the Lean-To is set up for the better end of that range.

Easy To Live With

The wide Dutch-style double door gives you an opening that takes a wheelbarrow, and the low threshold means nothing to lift it over. Open the top halves on a mild day and you get air without letting the dog and the rabbits in; the key lock is on the right-hand door.

Rain off the roof runs into flip-top gutters with downspouts. Closed, they collect water for the garden; flipped open in dry months, they stay clear of leaves.

Built To Stay Outside

The frame is powder-coated, rust-proof aluminum with stainless steel hardware, rated for 62 mph wind and an 18 psf snow load, with a 15-year frame warranty behind it.

18 psf is a moderate rating, so in snow country brush the roof after a big storm and keep the interior warm so snow can melt off. Also, watch for snow sliding off the house roof above it.

If You Need Smaller Or Bigger

If this size isn’t quite right, the Lean-To family has two close neighbors:

Vego Lean-To S Greenhouse installed along a house wall with the patio in the background

Lean-To S: just like this one but slimmer, for a walkway or a narrow side yard

Vego Grand Lean-To Greenhouse installed against a house wall with a bistro table set in front

Grand Lean-To: the full-size version with roof vents, for a longer wall

Q&As

What foundation do I need?

Your foundation needs to be level, square, and well-draining—that matters more than the material. A treated wood beam base (anchored) works well for many installs. For maximum stability, go with concrete blocks/pavers or a poured concrete perimeter/slab.

Helpful guides:

Can I attach it to any wall?

It needs a structurally sound wall: concrete, brick, masonry, or a wood-framed wall fastened into the studs. Anchors for both are in the box. Siding, stone veneer, fences, and trellises can’t carry the weight and wind load on their own, so on a sided house it’s anchored through the finish into the framing behind it.

Does the wall material matter?

Yes. Brick, stone, and concrete store the day’s heat and release it overnight, which is where the lean-to’s warmth advantage comes from. Wood or vinyl walls block the wind but store less heat, so plan on a heater for hard freezes.

How much wall do I need?

About 8½ ft of straight wall with 6½ ft of clear ground in front of it. Anything on that stretch of wall, like a window or a hose bib, ends up inside the greenhouse, so check it before you pick the spot.

Is this a heavy-snow greenhouse?

No. It’s rated for 18 psf, which handles ordinary snowfall but not deep, wet accumulation. Brush the roof after big storms, keep the interior warm so snow can melt off, and keep an eye on snow sliding off the house roof above it.

Are There any accessories I should add?

We always recommend adding an exhaust fan because greenhouses can heat up very quickly in direct sunlight—even on mild days. If you plan to use the greenhouse in winter, you may need a heater as well.

Where does this ship from?

Houston, Texas

How Does Curbside Delivery Work?

Freight delivery drops your crate at the curb/end of driveway. Typically, you’ll unload the contents with the driver and the crate remains on the truck. If you have a forklift or tractor with long forks, you may be able to lower the whole crate using the liftgate. Plan for 2–3 people to help.

Tip: Make sure the truck can access your driveway and you have a clear staging area ready.
