The Alton Durham Orangerie is for someone who loves the look of a cedar orangerie but wants it in a footprint that feels easier to place. Its classic T-shaped design creates that distinctive garden focal point Alton is known for, while the more compact size makes it a natural fit for buyers who want beauty and presence without stepping up to a larger structure.
Built from Grade A, knot-free Western Red Cedar and set on an aluminum base frame that keeps the wood raised off the ground, the Cambridge is designed to stay solid over time. Add 3mm tempered safety glass, protective aluminum capping + rubber seals, and automatic roof vent openers (no electricity)—and you get a greenhouse that feels thoughtfully engineered, not fussy.

Natural cedar character
Because this is real cedar, you’ll see natural variation from piece to piece—lighter and darker tones are normal, and that’s part of its charm.
Outdoors, unfinished cedar will gradually weather to a soft silvery gray. If you prefer a more uniform look, you can stain or paint the wood.
Low-maintenance cedar design
Alton uses 100% Western Red Cedar, which is naturally rot-resistant and well-suited to greenhouse conditions.
It is also designed to keep water away from the most vulnerable areas—thanks to features like the roof glass overhang, aluminum capping, guttering, and the raised metal base that keeps the cedar off damp ground.

A timber frame that stays square (and goes together cleanly)
The Durham uses strong cedar framing bars with mortise-and-tenon and tongue-and-groove joints to help the frame stay rigid and aligned.
When a greenhouse stays square, everything keeps working properly—doors close cleanly, vents operate smoothly, and glazing stays seated the way it should season after season.
And because the joints interlock precisely, assembly tends to feel more straightforward and “self-aligning” as you build.
Tempered Glass With Extra Weather Protection
The Durham is glazed with 3mm tempered safety glass for a bright, premium growing environment.
Aluminum capping adds protection at key glazing points, while rubber seals help keep panels snug, improve weather resistance, and reduce rattling.

Ventilation that works without power
Roof vents include automatic openers that respond to temperature changes—so heat can escape without electricity. Louver windows add lower airflow to support circulation and help manage humidity.
Comfortable Access & Secure Close
A tall hinged door and low threshold make the Durham easy to use day to day—especially when your hands are full.
The door swings inward, and it comes standard with a keyed lock. Because the door swings inward, you can still get inside even if snow has built up outside—no clearing the doorway first.

What foundation do I need?
Picking a level site is the best first step. It is important that the foundation is level and strong enough to hold the greenhouse. A concrete slab or a concrete perimeter wall will provide the most solid, long-lasting base. The key is that your foundation is level, square, and well-draining—even small twists can affect door operation and panel fit.
Helpful guides:
Does cedar color vary?
Yes — and that’s normal. Cedar is a natural material, so boards will vary in tone (light honey to deeper reddish shades) and grain pattern. Over time, cedar also weather-shifts if left unfinished.
Do I need to paint or treat it?
No. All Alton greenhouses are made from naturally rot-resistant Western Red Cedar and come factory-treated with a clear preservative. You don’t need to stain or re-treat it for rot protection—most owners just do a yearly clean. If you want a specific color or want to slow the natural silvery aging, you can apply a stain/preservative (easiest before assembly).
Do the roof vent openers require electricity?
No. They are wax-cylinder openers, which expand and contract with temperature to open/close the vent—so there’s no wiring and no power required.
Are There any accessories I should add?
The Durham already includes shelving for the back wall. Beyond that, we always recommend adding an exhaust fan because greenhouses can heat up very quickly in direct sunlight—even on mild days. If you plan to use the greenhouse in winter, you may need a heater as well.
Where does this ship from?

How Does Curbside Delivery Work?
Freight delivery drops your crate at the curb/end of driveway. Typically, you’ll unload the contents with the driver and the crate remains on the truck. If you have a forklift or tractor with long forks, you may be able to lower the whole crate using the liftgate. Plan for 2–3 people to help.
Tip: Make sure the truck can access your driveway and you have a clear staging area ready.
